I'm right handed but have always used the sliver key quite a bit and very
comfortably as well as the other fingerings. Perhaps that is because I
learned a fast, chromatic scale early on.
There are some excellent "finger twister" exercises in the Rubank Advanced
books that drill this and alternate fingerings in general along with slides.
