My teacher was very big on alternate fingerings. It was never permitted to
flip a fingering, such as low Bb to B. Always use the banana key. Same
thing for throat F-F#. Etc. The one in question -- Eb/Bb -- doesn't seem
necessary too often, which is good, because the side or trill fingering is
in better tune than the banana key.

I've always taught the same way. I took on two new students last June; same
age, same middle school teacher. The young lady refuses to use the
alternate fingerings. I don't know how much this plays into it, but the
young man who started on the same day and uses all of the "right" keys is
musically almost a year ahead of her.
