Is it possible that the amount the pad vents is related to the pitch? It is
my understanding that pitch is based on where the tone hole is place along
the body of the instrument and that adjusting how high or low the pad vents
is related to the overall quality of the pitch itself (as in fuzzy or clear
sounding). Reguardless I agree that there is no reason to avoid one
fingering over the other. I perfer what ever makes the passage easier.
