Interesting thoughts arrive when you're not quite in either world, don't
they? Last night I was reading a novel with some philosophy in it.
It focused on the fact that every finite organism (or machine) can
respond to only a portion of the total available input. So this
morning I woke up thinking: "Since music can be considered a pruning
process in which parts of 'white noise' are judiciously discarded in
order to create a satisfying melody or timbre or whatever, is creativity
really just a pruning process?" And a voice cried out: "No! Pruning
and cutting are ultimately destructive acts, not creative acts!"
This afternoon, I'm fully awake. But a taste of the conundrum remains.
