To Lori Lovato, Rebecca, and other interested parties:

Is there a specific reason why you (Lori) recommend that students
learn Ab and A scales three full octaves but recommend that they learn
Db and D scales up to altissimo F and F# rather than up to Ab and A?

As an aside to Rebecca, here in Iceland we ask students at the high
school-plus level to know major and two minor scales (melodic and
harmonic) in all 12 keys (as well as a bunch of arpeggios and scales
in thirds). At the "intermediate level" - roughly 15 - 16 years of age
(a quick student gets there sooner, of course), we have the upper
limit of the range set at altissimo G. At the "advanced level" - a
good three or four years later, again depending on the student's
individual pace - the range for scales and arpeggios is extended to
altissimo Bb, and the range for scales in thirds is altissimo G. This
is according to a new curriculum that is just now going into effect.
The old requirements were quite similar, but the high Bb range was not
specified.

As for your question on natural minors, I know some teachers who
choose to teach the natural minor to their young students and then use
that as a jumping-off point for the other minor scales. So it never
hurts to know them. My personal experience is that the natural minor
is easy to pick up when you know the others, and for this reason, I
have never gone out of my way to teach it.

Best of luck in your auditions,

Anna
