I played the alto clarinet for 3 years. I wasn't forced to do it either. I
insisted. I bought my own alto clarinet too.

I am very greatful to the alto clarinet and love it very much, though I do
not play it anymore. When I was in the 7th grade I left the school I was
attending for a small private school with no band. When I went back to
public school in the 8th grade, I chose to play alto clarinet "you know...so
I could catch up." Perfect excuse! There were 3 of us playing alto clarinet
and none of us was able to count, so I took the liberty of learning how and
counting for us. This made me very arrogant. For my frist two years of high
school I insisted I play alto clarinet and came up with every excuse in the
world as to why the one alto clarinet the school owned should be mine. All
three of us wanted to play it. Kind of the reverse of Bill's story! Turns
out I was the winner (loser, even) in this one. I used the fact that I had
braces as an excuse, which is total crap, but it worked. Then I bought two
alto clarinets and took both of them (and no Bb) all the way to music camp
to exclusively play alto clarinet. I look back on that and want to kick
myself for that one, but it was a good experience. My teacher there
convinced me with next to no effort to switch back to Bb. I think had I
never switched to alto, I would have quit band. I fell in love with band
while I was playing alto clarinet.
