Try working on the F Major scale in the upper octave, and then
practicing the last "tetra-chord", C D E F. F E D C. C D E
F. F E D C. Over and over. I have a couple of 8th graders who are
getting pretty good. Some of them really get a kick out of playing "Lean
on Me" in the altissimo range, trying to make it sound "musical". They
want to be able to play their F scale for 3 octaves during their
"stand-up" scale tests in band, where they have to stand up and play
their scale that they have been assigned, for memory.
When you feel that you can play your F scale smoothly and in tune
for 3 octaves, then work on G the same way. Then F#. Then Ab. It's a
process that takes time. None of my 8th graders can play an A Major
scale for 3 octaves yet. ANNIE
