Dear Clarinetists,
I saw a great show on PBS last night, the first on a series about
the blues, to be aired every evening this week. ANNIE

Dear List,

For all you jazz and blues fans out there, there was a fascinating
segment on the History of the Blues documentary on PBS by Martin
Scorcese last night that features a handcrafted fife made out of cane
used by slaves in Mississippi, passed down through the generations, and
still being played, primarily in the same families. Then they trace the
historical roots of the instrument back to West Africa. My sister
called me from Colorado, where it started an hour earlier, so I was able
to catch it here in CA where it started an hour later. The instrument
is held on the left side, based on a pentatonic scale, and played with
drums as backup, using some very cool African rhythms.

It's worth seeing if you are interested in the evolution of the blues
and use of the flute--I always thought we had Herbie Mann to thank for
introducing the flute into this idiom, but apparently the roots go
straight back to Africa!!
