Subj: [kl] [clarinet] The moderated clarinet listserv is now available!
Date: Fri, 26 Sep 2003 11:03:14 -0400

Mark Charette volunteered to set up the necessary
infrastructure for a
moderated version of the clarinet discussion list.
Thanks to Mark, and the
efforts of our volunteer moderators, I am pleased to
announce that the list
is now available.

Here's how the list works:

- subscribe to the moderated list by sending a
message to
clarinet-subscribe@-----.org

- cancel your subscription to the moderated list by
sending a message to
clarinet-unsubscribe@-----.org

- get help on list commands by sending a message to
clarinet-help@-----.org

- anyone who is interested in posting a message to
the moderated list is
welcome to do so by simply sending that message to
clarinet@-----.org -
there is no need to subscribe to be able to post
(however, you must
subscribe to be able to RECEIVE moderated messages,
UNLESS you are already a
member of the regular klarinet list)

- the moderator on duty will review each posted
message and either reject
the message or accept it

- rejected messages will be returned to the sender
and might include
comments as to the reason for rejection

- accepted messages will be transmitted to the
moderated clarinet list
subscribers

- if you subscribe to the regular klarinet list,
you'll see approved
messages appear there as well (so, if you just want to
read the moderated
postings, you don't have to subscribe to the other
list)

The moderators will be working together to establish a
general moderating
style over the next several weeks; please bear with us
as we work that out.
In general, we've agreed that the following topics
will usually be accepted:

questions re playing, technique, equipment, music,
etc.; expositions on
philosophy of music; teaching and playing approaches;
questions on
composition for the instrument; history of the
instrument and the
literature; other topics as agreed upon by the
moderators

And the following will typically be denied:

marching band (!); sports discussions; pet discussions
(OK, there might be
LIMITED humorous exceptions); advertising (except
brief taglines, and
announcement of events; habitual one-liner replies to
nearly every list
message; beating a dead horse; items re list
administration; religious and
political discussions; flames; SPAM; "me-too" comments
unless something else
of value is added to the conversation; a whole variety
of other off-topic
items (essentially: has nothing to do with clarinet or
music and the poster
has not demonstrated, in the message, how it does
relate in some useful way)

Our volunteer moderators (thank you!) are:

Walter Grabner
Donna Higgins
Dave Kumpf
Trish Mendenhall
David Niethamer
Ed Wojtowicz

Welcome, and enjoy!
