Reconsider the direct MIDI playback. Take a look at

as a pitch for portability. You DO need larger speakers if you're going to
play in such a place, but you'd need them anyway if you were playing .WAV
files. Moreover, MIDI files allow you to mute various tracks as other
wandering musicians show up. Your playback program of course has to allow
you to mute tracks, but there are a bunch out there which do
that. Finally, all of my .MUS and MIDI file offerings occupy less than 200
MBytes at this time, filling only about 1/3 of a CD-ROM, whereas the same
number of playback files in WAV format would require multiple discs.
