Source: Wind Ensemble Sourcebook and Biographical Guide, Stoneham =
Gillaspie
and Clark, Greenwood Press. (along with its companion, The Wind Ensemble
Catalog Gillapsie, Stoneham and Clark, an invaluable critical source for
over 15,000 wind ensemble works).

His name is also spelled Kozeluch and Gosheloch, and his full first =
names
are Johann Evangelista (the Latinised form) OR Jan Antonin Tomas (Czech
form).

"Born 14 Dec 1738 Velvary, died 3 Feb 1814 Prague. It is often unclear
whether Jan or [his nephew] Leopold Kozeluh wrote a particular work. Jan =
was
a pupil of Josef Seger in Prague and after a period in Vienna, returned =
to
Prague. From 1734 until his death, he was Choirmaster at the Cathedral. =
He
wrote much church music."

And they say amusingly about Leopold Anton (1747 also Velvary - 1818
Vienna): Kozeluch is remembered without sympathy. Beethoven called him
"miserabilis"; Alexander Stratton, of the British Embassy in Vienna =
observed
"All that can be said of Kozeluch is that he is a biped without =
feathers".
Kozeluch alone seems to have had an infallibly high opinion of himself.
Talent he had, with a fluent style matching popular taste. A composition
pupil of his uncle (JA Kozeluch) and a piano pupil of FX Dusek. He had =
all
the political skills. Yet he turned down Mozart's Salzburg post in a =
rare
moment of modesty: if the Archbishop would let Mozart go, what could =
such as
he hope for? Kozeluch was created Imnperial Court Composer in 1792, =
after
Mozart's death; Krommer succeeded in 1818 after the death of Kozeluch."

I played the concerto earlier this year - it is a delightful piece. I =
don=92t
know of a picture of him though. You could try the Czech or Austrian
nationla libraries.

Hey!

I'm organizing a concert in which will be played the clarinet concerto =
in E
flat major of Jan Evanglista Antonin Kozeluh (1738-1814) - and here's =
the
problem, the
birth- and death-dates are about all I can find out about the composer. =
Can
anyone help me? We intend to give some information on the composers =
whose
music will be performed in the concert, if possible show a picture of =
them,
too (if that's not asking for too much in this particular case), and by =
now
I'm quite desperate...
