Thank you for the complete explanation. Some day, when the perfect
opportunity presents itself, I may try it. I have no idea why, but I
seldom see 'junky' clarinets at garage sales, etc in my town.

Perhaps it's superstitious behavior on my part, but I'm convinced that
Larry Guy's recommendation to rub the reed dry on both sides with your
thumb against a piece of glass (after rinsing) pays dividends. [This
is my very meager contribution to the discussion --- except that the
"clench my hands around my throat, bug out my eyes and gag loudly"
routine could be further enhanced by carrying a weird color of makeup
concealed in your hand (perhaps a strong blue?) and rubbing it on your
skin or lips after picking up the instrument. Perhaps also staggering
weakly at the knees. Maybe the seller will pay *you* to dispose of the
health hazard?]
