With the very greatest respect David, can I make four points?

Firstly I wasn't 100% serious..........

Secondly you are basing your advice on American Law

Thirdly I have recently been in a bad accident due to the other driver
driving fast on my side of the road - thanks to my superb BMW I was
virtually uninjured. That colours one's view of things!

And fourthly and possibly most significant - I prosecute for a living
and guess I have a better appreciation of the realities of road traffic
law as it applies to me!!!

Seriously though - speed alone doesn't cause accidents. The German
Autobahnen are among the safest motorways and there is no overall speed
limit. What kills is speed in the wrong place. I would never condone
serious speeding in urban areas. The lower the limit the more important
it is to keep to it. I don't think we are fundamentally disagreeing

And - strangely enough - since I have the M3 (replacement for the 3
litre BMW that was somewhat bent) I tend to drive slower most of the
time!!!

I think you should listen to what he is saying, Matthew...but I've
been
bitching about it for what, 5 months now? Does anyone have any horror
stories that might scare our friend Matthew into driving a little
slower?
That would make me very happy. I really don't want him to die because
how
would I know what happened?

I know this is a clarinet list, not a car list, but I think you should
see
why I posted this so off the topic message. I think Matthew is an
important
contributor to this list and I wouldn't want anything bad to happen to
him.

Matthew, I am in no way insulting your driving abilities. I'm just
expressing my concern because we all know that popular saying...."Shit
Happens!"

It's simple - Matthew, if you ever, EVER get into an accident going
way over the speedlimit, it will always, ALWAYS be your fault and you
will be prosecuted for the accident and probable deaths. The other
Lawyer will **always** blame your speed on the accident from not
giving the other driver the time to react. There was a story on TV
last week (NBC if I recall) about a driver who at 18 was drag racing
around town and one such race hit a Mommy-Van crossing in front of
him. He was going 90MPH in a 35 area and killed the Mom and her
daughter the day before they were moving from Miami to out West. They
didn't see him coming till he hit them and they died a fiery death
(the van blew up).

It isn't the speed you are doing that is the problem, it's the other
drivers around you who will trip you up and someone will die from it.
Could be you (that's your own damn stupidity), could be an innocent
victim.
