A couple of more piece of information that I should have included:

I regualrly oil the bore of my clarinets with the correct bore oil. (Once a
month).

On one (an A Buffet), I used leather pads. The pads themselves seal quite
well, but I noticed that there a distint brown ring around the spot that
contacts the tone whole openings.

Just a thought: could it be that the bore oil is finding it's way to the
pads? Could this make the fish-skin pads go brittle and leaving the brown
ring on the leather pads?
