I don't agree. I am thinking of a vituoso clarinetist who has great sound,
intonation, and technique, of course, but seems to have no soul whatsoever.
This person, who I have heard live and on many recordings, has been taught to
do dynamics in an effort to sound expressive, but is expressive only of 'flash'
and bravado.
For a good definition of what makes a person a musician, I highly recommend
the book I am currently reading, "The Mastery of Music--Ten Pathways to True
Artistry" by Barry Green, he of 'Inner Game of Music' fame.
