Subj: [kl] New Backun barrels and bells
Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 15:56:39 -0400

Today I received my barrels and bells (A and Bb clarinets) that I ordered
from Morrie Backun at ClarinetFest. To those of you with Patricola
instruments, I cannot stress the fact that these bells and barrels are
worth their weight in gold. I can't really speak for the grenadilla
instruments, but the rosewood ones, which have a beautiful sweet sound but
are somewhat lacking in the ability to project - well this equipment turns
them into bullhorns. Every note is clear and right on pitch with no
wavering at all. The low notes are big and vibrant and full and it is as
easy to pop out the high A above the staff as it is to play any other note
(at pitch too). I swear, Morrie Backun is going to be one rich man. I
can't wait to go to rehearsal tonight. For once, I am going to be able to
compete with those blasted trumpets behind my back! My e-flat barrel and
bell arrive next week and we are doing El Salon Mexico. Playtime has
arrived!!!!! These things are the kiss of death for anyone who tries to
mess with me.
