I never imagined that a casual remark would inspire such a varied exchange.
So be it.
When I made my initial remark it was only for the sake of suggesting that
some students - who may or may not be out there reading- may wish to stay
with a printed cadenza - if they perform them at all. This was how I was
taught and I believe it has value (this is my opinion, and nothing more) As
for Cadenzas, their content and performance, I know little compared to
others on this list.
That said, here I go again (you'd think I'd learn by now)
I like cadenzas. I think that they provide an interesting break to most
concertos. They also provide a chance for the soloist to contribute their
own ideas to that particular performance. As discussed I think that most of
us believe that this is the intent of most composers who include cadenzas in
their concertos. Allowing for the expected variations of performer, period
and style of composition, as well as individual situations, I think it
likely that cadenzas are entirely optional and thereby not always heard. As
for the Mozart concerto's absence of cadenza(s), I was taught to optionally
play with a little inserted material in the melody in the second movement.
I believe the term used upon me in school (correct or not, I do not know -
but have no reason to believe otherwise as my teacher certainly knows what
he is doing) was an 'eingang' (please excuse any misspelling as my notes are
elsewhere).
Please excuse me if this offends or go against what you were taught. I'm
not trying to state any certain facts as in most things - there may not be
any. Accept this as input to a discussion that I wasn't intent upon
instigating and preclude any response with the knowledge that this is my
opinion, nothing more. I don't think I'm wrong, nor do I think I'm right.
have at it.
