Got that one. Really fine. Also David Shifrin. I believe Sharon Kam
(Neidich's student at Juilliard, I think) has recorded it, but if she has,
I've not heard it yet. My favorite remains Gigliotti's with the
Philadelphia. Someone made me a tape of it about two years ago because my
copy of the "First Chair" vinyl was so worn that it was unplayable.
Gigliotti had something going that day: it has all the requisite virtuosity
the piece demands, but G. added an emotional quality and intensity that took
it way far from being playing a lot of notes really fast. That's the
recording that got me, in the 8th grade, to start practicing like I meant it.
I remember we had this discussion a couple of years ago--Sony apparently has
no interest in rereleasing the two First Chair recordings on CD. Apparently
even Gigliotti himself could not get them to budge. Economics uber alles.
