A group with which I rehearsed recently was at the home of a retired wind
player with the L.A. Philharmonic. The player in our group was his
wife. Her husband refuses to play his instrument any more.
The father of a college classmate was a movie studio bassoonist. He
refused to let his kids take up instruments.
I see similar effects of burnout from time to time and I feel so sorry but
I'm helpless even to know how to think about such tragedies. I haven't
burned out from my profession (chemistry) or my day job (teaching) and I
love to be able to plan my life so that it has enough slippage to be able
to sneak off and play my instrument whenever the opportunity arises. Maybe
there's a lesson to be learned.
I certainly look forward to viewing the documentary. Thanks for bringing
it to our attention.
Oliver
