Dear Abraham,
I have thought about taking a vacation to Brazil many times. I have
no idea where I would go. If I could figure out how to plan a vacation
to Brazil that involved studying and playing lots of "Choros", then
maybe I would. I wish I was brave enough to just pack up and go live
down there for a few months. I might be able to pick up the music and
Portuguese by osmosis if I were there long enough.
Last night I was listening to track #5 from "Gardalhada", "Bebe"
and I thought to myself, "I am not going to write this out on staff
paper, and I am not going to play it on the C clarinet. I am going to
learn it and memorize it as I learn it." I was able to get through the
first section, which repeats itself. I went to teach my first student
today, a 6th grader, and I taught the first section to her. It is the
kind of music that lends itself to memorization. Actually, that
particular tune, "Bebe" is a very cool way to teach a young student how
to strike their low F# key seven times in a row with nice, relaxed, but
exact movement of the pinkie. ANNIE
