Dear Abraham,
A couple of years ago I was referred to Joselita Goncalves at a
sheet music store in Brazil. Her email address is cartas@-----.br
She reads and writes in English and Portuguese and helped me order the
books I needed to get started. Anyhow, Joselita told me about 2 volumes
of Brasilian Choro music,
Choro brasileiro Volumes 1 & 2
and also about a similiar book of Brasilian pieces by Pixinguina.
I ordered all 3 books with my credit card and I think they cost me
about $70 total. I can't remember. Anyhow, these are like "fake" books
that we have in the U.S. of standards, only they are all Brazilian
standards, written in concert pitch, in straight sixteenth notes. I
can't transpose into concert pitch that fast, so I bought a C clarinet.
I'm glad I have the C clarinet for other things, but it is not suitable
for Brazillian music. You have to transpose each tune and play it on
your Bb clarinet, preferably for memory, just like you would memorize
standards that you play in a jazz band.
Since receiving Paulo Sergio Santos' new C.D. "Gargalhada", I feel
that I now have the strenght to memorize many of the tunes on that C.D.
I will have to write them out, but it will be worth it. Some of the
technical things that he plays are so fun and interesting. I am more
interested in learning these tunes than I have ever been in Klose,
Baermann, Rose or Jeanjean. I think that Paulo Sergio-Santos and some of
the other Brazilian clarinetists may be "Kokopelli's" reincarnated.
Kokopelli was a Southwest flutist in Native American history, who
brought great joy to everybody with his flute playing. He is often
depicted with a hump back, but many people believe that this was not a
hump, but a basket that he used to carry peoples problems away. When I
draw Kokopellis for my quilt applique, I always add a bell to the bottom
of the flute, because to me, these are little men playing clarinets.
