Hi Anne e folks, well let me introduce myself. I have beeen reading the list
since April 2003. My name is Abraham Gamboa and I live in Brasil, although I
was born in the Boston area. My folks are from the Cape Verde Islands
(ex-portuguese colony off of the Nortwest African Coast).
I came to Brasil in 19976 for the first time alhough I had a lot od
knowledge of the country since both my parents had relatives there. I was
also very fascinated by Samba and Bossa Nova.
In Brasil I became acquainted with the "Chorinho" style and many of it's
best pioneers like Pixinguinha (flute, sax), Jacob de Bandolim, Zequinha de
Abreu and many more.
There are many great younger peple playing this and lots of other styles
(samba has a lot of styles itself).
I had become good friends with Sergio Borgani and his quarteto "Sujeito o
Guincho" a pun on words of sorts. Guincho (musically speaking) is when your
horn pinches and screams a little like a high pitch whistle and it also
means to get your car towed!!
I lived in São Paulo for a long time in the 80's and met a lot of great
clarinet, woodwind and brass players. Well brasilian are n atural musicinas
and given the conditions to study, buy instruments and accessories they are
REALLY GOOD!!!
I don't know the Rio musicians so well and I don't know Fernando Silveira
personally.
I am trying to get some folks to write more about how to plaay Brasilina
styles like musical methods. The syncpations and the stuff you play
(interpret) not written is always the difficult thing. Like playing eight
notes in swing jazz!!
I haven't been playng pro (sax and clarinet, jazz and brasilian stuff) for a
while and mostly playing in churches just to keep up a little. I hope I can
get my chopps (in Brasil this word means draft beer) together and make a few
bucks again (here the currency is "reais" the USD = about R$3) we have to
buy all impoted stuff based on these prices and more!!! US minimum salary
here is good, believe me.
Brasil is superbeautiful full of wonderful music, people and a great place
to visit or live. Let's keep in touch. I'm trying to see if saxjournal or
other publishers might
be interested in some projects. Bob Ackerman who has been done and did some
fine workshops(pwsax@-----.net) is selling some great sax mouthpieces that
some friends make here (by hand) and send to him. David Liebman (who came
down last year and hung out with us, great Cd "The Unknown Jobim"
www.gmn.com, we hope
to have him back soon) uses one, Micheal Brecker and Jerry Borganzi also use
them.
Thanks for all those great infomative e-mails and some of the discussions
and fights also. Tony Pay is THE MAN!!!! Some of the kids kill me like
Rebecca, keep up the music and be yourself for sure, for me God mademusic
to make us happy so........................ Abe.
