After re-reading all of this thread, including my own comments:

Hindsight is always easier, but now I think that many of us (myself and
Bryan included) must share portions of the responsibilty for how this
thread devolved into unpleasant "ad hominems", which are seldom useful
during a conversation.

What should be done? I say --- we all should accept our contribution
to the misunderstanding, and then we can move on.
