Rebecca,

I started thinking after my last message, so I went and dragged out my copy
(copyright 1929; assigned to Alfred Music 1940). I think I made a mistake,
at least in first impression.

This edition (18 Etudes, green cover, $2.50 net.) has a forword in English.
In the etudes, there are no footnotes. There are expression markings. #1
starts "Lent et expressif". Generally, slowly, and expressively. Just
glancing around (don't have my glasses) "plus animé". Generally with more
animation. "Très expres." Very expressively. "ret. dim." Slow down and
get softer. "Lent mais pas trop" Slow, but not too slow. Most of these
have English equivilents (or close equivilent) that you can figure out the
meanings.

I don't have my multilingual music dictionary close at hand, but if you do
plan, as you have said, to become a professional musician, that's one of
those beneficial books.

Sorry for the misrepresentation.

Jim Hobby
