Tony Pay said, in part:

"Fortunately, the structure of the world of music determines that no
clarinet maker can force reeds, mouthpieces, even music itself, to
conform to 'standards' determined by their clarinets."

But what about this? Fairly recently Vandoren changed the tip shape of
their reeds and their mouthpieces. So now we have this situation: If
you have an old Vandoren mouthpiece and you want to continue to use
Vandoren reeds, the new reeds don't fit well. You are motivated to
replace your Vandoren mouthpiece with an "up to date" model.

If you used Vandoren reeds on someone else's mouthpiece, the new reeds
don't fit well. You are motivated to buy a new Vandoren mouthpiece.

If you are considering acquiring a Vandoren mouthpiece, you realize
that only the Vandoren reed will fit the tip perfectly.

Of course, you can get disgusted by the whole mess and avoid Vandoren
reeds and Vandoren mouthpieces altogether, like me. But I think maybe
Vandoren tried to pull a Micro$oft.
