But why does one need a better quality instrument, unless the current one
is somehow falling short of the demands made of it. Of course, some people
go out and buy their R-13 not because their current instrument is in any
way deficient, but simply to join the "club" of players with pro-level
instruments. And to feel full members of the club, buy the same model the
others have. On the other hand, if one has decided that one's current
instrument has intonation problems, or is limited in projection, then one
at least knows what criteria to apply when testing NEW instruments, rather
than just looking for the elusive and nebulous "better quality."

I had a customer in the store the other day who came in to buy her Bach
Stradivarius trumpet. I asked her if she had tried the other comparable
instruments we had available. She had not. I encouraged her to try the
Conn Vintage One, Yamaha Xeno, and Getzen Doc Sevrensen in our test
room. I felt better, and I think SHE felt better then, too. Even though
she stuck to the Bach Strad, at least she knows SHE made the choice, and
will not wonder "what if?" later. I wonder how many Buffet clarinets are
sold to people who do not at least TRY something else?

If you have to mic a saxophone, the rest of the band is TOO LOUD!
