Subj: [kl] the right side of Vandoren reeds?
Date: Fri, 29 Aug 2003 12:10:59 -0400

I'm relatively new to the list, but I've enjoyed reading and learning from
everyone.

For some time I've been using a measurement device to help in balancing
reeds. In nearly 15 years of taking measurements, I've noticed that the
right side of Vandoren reeds is almost always thicker than the left side.
And I do mean almost always. Out of every 100 Vandoren reeds I've seen
(traditional and V12), it's been true of 98, maybe 99.

So, my questions...

1) Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon?

2) Why the right side? Why not the left? Why not sometimes right and
sometimes left? Is there something specific to Vandoren's production method
that's generating this imbalance?

3) Is this generally true of other reed makers?

4) From this, can we draw any broad lessons for reed adjustments? I mean,
besides scraping away indiscriminately at the right side of every reed.

Thanks,
Lee
