I know that the opinions of a retired and disabled player of minor
orchestras is probably of little value. But when I made my choice of a
professional instrument -- in spite of three teachers who played Buffets --
I chose a Selmer set. I thought they played better than Buffet (and
Leblanc). All of the Buffets I tried felt stuffy. All of the Leblancs felt
that they weighed 5-6 pounds more than any other brand. So I elected the
Selmer. The store -- a rather small store in a small community -- didn't
have the configuration I wanted. Arrangements were made with Selmer's
people in France to make my set. When I received them, there was a
handwritten note on blue note paper inside the case that said (in French)
that he hoped I enjoyed them. Signed by Henri Selmer. (Of course, I had no
way of knowing if it was actually him or some secretary, but they played
beautifully -- with one minor adjustment -- and are still fine today, 42
years later. I just hope I can get control of my hand back so that I can
play them again.)
