This long discussion can be summarised in my opinion focussing on the
following main points:
a. the "best" clarinet branche do not exist at all
b. a clarinet is a sound generator, a tube with keywork. The set-up is also
very important. A professional clarinettist is able to work on different
branches with a various set-up. Preference is determined on various aspects:
c. knowledge and availability of different branches
d. for students: what is the "local" standard, sometimes strongly determined
by the teacher, in any case in the past.
e. requirements of branch or system in clarinet groups of orchestras (very
important in the main orchestras in some European countries as the
Netherlands, Germany and Austria in any case) - no reaction about clarinet
schools, please -
f. of course ergonomic aspects of the keywork and common (wood) quality
g. "feeling" and emotional binding with clarinetmakers concerning service,
adaptations, when the case

Limited availability in choice (hand made instruments by a lot of famous but
smaller firms) or scarce testing possibilities is for many people in many
countries also a problem, not only for the Russian ones!
The firms with a good network and adequate export/marketing organisation do
have many (maybe without merit) commercial advantages.... Internet has maybe
changed a lot.
