I bought a new R13 in February. That day, I played 9 clarinets new and used,
4 Buffet, 3 Selmer, and 2 Leblanc. All were good. The biggest differences
were between the new and used instruments. Did I settle on the R13 because
it was best compromise between all my required playing characteristics,
sound, price, aftermarket support (Chaddash barrel, Brannenizing, etc)? Yes.
Was I influenced by the name? Probably.

At the time, and given this specific set of instruments, I actually
preferred the top model Leblanc. But they scared me a little. Too bright,
perhaps too free-blowing. Is that an objective fact or is what I happen to
be comfortable with. At 47 years old I went with what I thought to be the
conservative choice, and I have no regrets. The horn I bought is certainly
better than I am.
