Actually I laughed when I read Dan's reply. It reminded me of all
this...stuff. The orthography problem when you bring a language written in
Hebrew characters over to our system...plus the regional differences across
Europe...make it difficult to say for sure who is "right" or "wrong." My
long-deceased relations would start in with Litvak vs. Galitzianer, though I
have no idea where in La Bella Europa Dan's family came from. I just spelled
it the way I heard it which is the way I learned to say it. "You said
'Gezint' not 'Gezunt'! Chazeh! You're out of the klezmer band, go play in
some church!":-)
