To those aspiring to play Klezmer: There are as many Yiddish schools of
pronunciation as there were European countries where Yiddish was spoken.

For example, my maternal grandfather's shtetel (village) pronounced the
word for good luck "gezunt!"

However, in my paternal grandmother's shtetel, the word was pronounced
"gezint."

Both these shtetels were in the nation now known as Ukraine. They were,
however, on opposite sides of the province.

The word means "good luck, good health." Therefore, to all my colleagues
who are continually on the hunt for a good reed, I say:

"A gezunt (gezint) tsu dir in shticklach."

"Good luck to you and your reeds!"
