Marc,

"Saying 'I will only play Buffet because all the pro's do' is, in my
opinion, not a smart thing to say."

I don't believe that's what David said or even implied. He was implying that
pros play Buffet because many (if not most) prefer them over all other
clarinets available to them. "Smart" players, the ones doing their homework,
should find out what the "best" (a dangerous word) players select. This is a
good place to start when searching for an instrument. Many of the
anti-Buffet crowd try to distort the fact that many of the best players and
top educators do choose Buffet. It seems that these detractors would like
everyone to believe that those/we using Buffet, select the clarinet because
they/we are simple...or just follow the herd. This really doesn't ever make
much sense to me. I don't feel that this the criteria that the "best"
players (I know) use when selecting a clarinet. "Smart" players have an
objective set of criteria that must be met, before any clarinet, including a
Buffet, has to meet before it gets the nod. In my experience, the issue
boils down to different people having different criteria lists. I believe
that players, in search of a new instrument, should try whatever might be
available....but should have a solid set of objective criteria in place
before they test the instruments.
