Warning: Anecdotal advice to follow!!

5 is a fine age to start clarinet. My kids currently16,12 and 9 all began
clarinet at age 5. The 9 year old is still at it. They began using left
hand notes only. You can concoct all manner of melodies using just the one
hand.

Using a neck strap, avoiding chin contact on the reed and allowing the head
to tilt down a bit while playing should reduce teeth problems. Think "have
the front teeth oppose" like biting a carrot to diminish the lever effect
of laying the reed on the chin.
