Subj: [kl] 56 Rue Lepic Reeds by Vandoren
Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 00:05:41 -0400

My wife, my son and I went over to the D'addario Vandoren Studio at 250 W
54th Street, 6th Floor, NYC to try the new Vandoren 56 Rue Lepic reeds.

David Gould, who runs the studio (open on Mondays and Fridays only - call
212-399-9457), was very helpful. We purchased two boxes of 3's, which was
all the studio had today.

The www.vandoren.com website has information on these including large 3D
pictures of the reeds to view, in which, for example, the thicker, narrower
base can be seen.

Our impression at the studio and at home with the reeds has been positive. I
have really not been able to use Vandoren reeds in the past, because I
always found myself using reed strengths that were harder than I like just
to get a decent forte and altissimo sound. The 56, after one day's trial of
3 reeds, seems to combine the advantage of using a comfortable strength with
not tonally "crashing" in forte or high register. Staccato is also very easy
and clear for me. Only the next couple of weeks will reveal whether they
keep this advantage for long.

My favorite reeds for response in the past have been Steuer. These seem
closer to these. In shape they are very much like the Black Master reeds
Vandoren makes for Austrian players (with Oehler clarinets and long, closed
taper). I played Oehler German clarinets for 17 years, (now I play Buffet RC
and Schreiber RCR 5 mthp.) so these new 56 Rue Lepic reeds accommodate me a
bit in this direction. Time will tell.

This studio seems to have the entire Vandoren product line, and there is
opportunity by appointment to go in different rooms and try various clarinet
and sax mthps.
