Do you think that the word "valve" may tempt a student in the wrong
direction also? Namely, it hints that starting / stopping the air flow
is the primary goal, which may equate in the student's mind to shoving
the reed against the facing? Even if the air flow does stop when the
reed seals against the facing, isn't the true goal to stop the reed's
vibration with as little effect as possible to air pressure during the
entire cycle? If valving the air flow is presented as the primary
goal, this could lead to student to substitute other air valving methods
in place of tonguing --- such as glottal articulation, interruption of
breath support, etc?
