Thanks for all this - I will give it some thought as to whether to bring
the instruments with me or not. I wasn't planning on doing so, as it
isn't a "playing" trip, but on the other hand to get to choose a barrel
is obviously much better than to just get a random one.

Does he deal in Eb as well?

I'm sailing into New York on the 25th and flying back on the 30th -
early (I think the flight is 9 am from JFK) and am hoping to get to the
Metropolitan as well!

Other than that I have no plans whatsoever!

Matthew

Matthew,

Keep in touch when you are going to be over here...I'd love to
meet while you are in NYC!

Guy sometimes is lax about responding to e-mails. His studio
phone number is on the website, and I will repeat it here...
212-239-7187. He is usually there almost every day during the
10-6 (eastern standard time) hours. Guy does make custom barrels
also, but the Buffet Chadash barrels he manufactures are still
made by hand (with a reamer/lathe combo thingie - obviously NOT
the real technical name.) Guy gets blanks from Buffet WITHOUT a
taper (not ones already made to be sold) and reams them with his
special 2 stage reaming process. It's great to see him
personally to try out 10-20 barrels and find the one(s) you want
instead of getting just one mailorder. Like all of the rest of
the parts of the clarinet, the barrels have individual qualities
that depend on the instrument you pair it with.

My last set of Buffets were RC bores, and I had 2 Chadash
barrels for each (along with Clark Fobes barrels, which I also
used quite a bit on the RC instruments. I have not had to buy
the Chadash barrels recently. I have a set of Guy Chadash
clarinets, and he makes the barrels for me custom when I need
them (it's a free perk with his clarinets...lifetime repair for
the Chadash clarinets and barrels of any length, when needed.) I
also have one of his custom C barrels for my Patricola C
clarinet with a thicker wall on the barrel - amazing difference
in the sound of my C. The Chadash A barrels even made my Leblanc
L300 A (backup instrument) play AMAZINGLY well...better in tune
and more projection without being too edgy. I would consider
Guy's barrels for MOST French bore instruments, including the
RC. YMMV on German or Viennese instruments.

If we meet up, you are more than happy to try my Chadash
clarinets too...he usually only has finished clarinets for a few
days in his studio before getting them to the people who ordered
them, so it's potluck whether you see him when he has new
clarinets fully made, or a bunch in progress instead.

When are you coming to NYC?
