Not to start the Mac / Wintel flame again. or to put too fine a point
on it, but I think that the issue here is that Apple does not allow
clones (except for their one brief, now ended, flirtation) and that
they seem to either derate components or overengineer their designs.
It's one of the reasons that Apple feels that they can use, what some
consider, such high pricing.

I know that it is certainly physically possible for any power supply
to fail, especially if there are power problems in your area. But in
15 years of administering Macs in the corporate and home environment,
I just haven't seen any go on a Mac. And I still have some clients
running 10+ year old machines 24/7 as mail servers, etc. In that same
time, I have done several on various Wintel clones, and tried to
purchase decent replacement supplies, Antec or the like.

Coke!

Pepsi!

Leblanc!

Buffet!

Selmer!

I believe that higher end manufacturer's of PEECEEs can and do use
good components in their more expensive systems. I also know that to
sell you a 399 machine, you're not getting top of the line components.
