Hi Wendy,

Well, I always played with my mouthpiece turned a bit and not quite straight
so the condensed water wouldn't flow into my Bflat key, etc. I also rested
the bell on my knee because the pressure on my wrists hurt. Dave Katz (the
teacher), said there was undue stress on my wrists because of the torque
pressure put on them. He turned the mouthpiece absolutely straight and said
to hold my clarinet up and forward with my elbows out from my chest. This
would accomplish several things (and he was right!): the water would flow
around the keys, not through them, my chest would be free-er to breathe and
the tone would become clearer and not so muffled. He also said standing
like that projects the sound.

Aside from that, I massage my wrists and hands from time to time. Theres
active release technique that the chiropractors learn, which apparently
works as well as the operation, but they only teach it to each other, alas,
so I poke around with my thumbs in those spots and it feels good.

Mary
