So you're trained to do the tasks you are required to do at work, but your
concern was for your home computer, no?

Your 'higher math in high school' analogy is slightly flawed since you're
not using higher math on a regular basis whereas you are using a computer.
As for continually updating my/your computer skills, I'm not sure how to
respond to that. I haven't taken a "course" in anything computer related
since elementary school when I got to steer a turtle around the screen (what
was that called?). I did read "Networking for Dummies" when I was handed
the position of Network Administrator and I always read the manual when we
get new software. Lucky for me, we don't update our computers very often
around here. Or maybe that's unlucky for me since then we seem to be living
in the Dark Ages. It's very sad that your IT profs don't know how to fix
your pool (I'm not sure what that is, sorry). It seems like they should get
some updating, too. :)

Have a Nice Day!!

Hi Wendy,

Believe it or not I work at a community college and am required to take
computer training. But the training is for the tasks that I am authorized
to do on my computer in my office. Since I have no administrative rights,
I am not allowed to do ant of the things we have been discussing. The last
real Windows training I had was for Windows 95. Windows 2000 is vastly
different. Also, the fact that I don't do this stuff repeatedly makes it
difficult to remember how it all works. I took higher math courses in
school, but since I don't use the skills, I have forgotten how to do most
of the math processes I learned. How often do you have to update your
skills? The computer business changes so rapidly that I can't keep
up. This is why companies hire people with your skills. I run a pool that
is computerized but our IT staff has no idea how it runs and can't help me
when it malfunctions. I can run my pool but I am not so certain that you
could. So when things get hairy, I call the people who installed it to
help me out. Unfortunately, I don't have the time to keep up with all of
this stuff. I work during the day and teach in the afternoon and then go
to rehearsal at night. It would be great if I could "know it all", but I
don't, so I depend on others to help me with what I don't know.

Nancy
