Dan,

You are not alone with this phenomenon.

I am the email administrator for the firm that I work for and this is now a
quite common and daily occurrence.

The spammers are always trying to stay one step ahead of the programs that
block spam. They have figured out that spam sent using a legitimate address
has a better chance of getting through the firewalls than those sent using
phony addresses and mail domains.

We even had spam sent to people within our firm with a sender address of
someone else in the firm. As soon as I realized what was happening I was
able to set up filters for this.

Now viruses are starting to do the same thing. They forge legitimate
addresses in the hope that the person receiving the infected message will
recognize the sender address and be tricked into opening it.

Mark has commented on this before, but this does create a lot of confusion
among the uninformed or uninitiated.

that I not send any future mail "of this type" to that party. The mail
was some pornography but it was sent with my email address as the sender. >>
