According to Gibson Research Center, www.grc.com Zone Alarm is a very
good software firewall and it's free here: www.zonealarm.com
You have to tweak it a little so that your applications can access the
Internet, but after that it alerts you of any attempt to reach your
computer. In another words, if someone were to ping your Ip address, Zone
Alarm pops up an alert to ask you if you want your computer to respond - you
click NO.. Also, if you get a wormbot, Zone Alarm will pop up an alert if
it tries to access the Internet - you can prevent that, too and then
investigate what the heck you're infected with. It also seems to look at
e-mail attachments, but I'm not certain how well that works. You have
Norton for that.
It's been around for awhile. Apologies if this is old news to anyone.
