Jay,
I have had some experience with a work of Perle's for orchestra. In short,
it was UGLY. Overly long, serial and/or atonal, way over-scored, etc. The kind
of academic, ugly, boring stuff that gave Modern Music a bad name. However, the
work I heard, and did copywork for, was written in the 1980's, so just maybe he
had a more accessible style in the 1940's. Check out what Groves Dictionary has
to say about him (including the 'Amerigrove'). If he does indeed have stylistic
periods, what was he composing then?
