That is not true.

William R. Wright who recently retired from the National Symphony Orchestra
where he played assistant principal and Eb clarinet for forty years studied
with Ralph McLane for more than four years. He also attended Curtis while McLane
was the clarinet teacher there. Bill graduated from Curtis in 1951, the year
McLane died.

Ralph McLane advised Bill NOT to use double lip embouchure because he thought
Bill's upper lip was too short. On his own Bill went ahead and switched to
double lip because he liked the results. McLane didn't object to him trying
it. Bill played double lip for about 10 years and then switched back to single
lip because he found double lip too painful. He has played single lip ever
since.
