has anyone ever played Perle's Three Sonatas for solo clarinet (1943)? I'm
looking for any info on this piece that someone may have. it was first
performed on aug. 7th 1955, in Chicago by a woman named Helen Joyce. Does
the name Helen Joyce ring any bells? Most of Perle's chamber music for
clarinet has been premiered by either the Dorian Wind Quintet or the Da Capo
Chamber Players, except his Sonata auasi una Fantasia for clarinet and
piano. That was premiered in Buffalo NY by a clarinet player Laneri (no
first name is given). Anyone know who Laneri is?

For those who have played any of Perle's music what are your general
impressions?

Partial list of Perle's music for clarinet...

Three Sonatas for solo clarinet 1943
Sonata quasi una Fantasia for clarinet and piano 1972
Sonata A Cinque for bass trombone, clarinet, violin and cello 1986
Nightsong for flute, clarinet, violin and cello 1988

and of course his 4 woodwind quintets. the 4th woodwind quintet written in
1984 won the Pulitzer Prize in music.

any insights to Mr. Perle and his music would be most helpful

thanks!
jay
