It was just a brief conversation (30 seconds?) as part of a larger discussion
on Brannenizing my instruments. I don't recall verbatim what she said, but the
main point I recall is that the design of the instruments is such that a
"dead" air space is intentionally created between the joints when the sections
are fully assembled. I didn't really press further as that wasn't what I'd
called her about, and I didn't want to eat up her time. Given the Brannens'
recognized expertise in clarinet repair (and, I presume, this implies some
knowledge of design), and my almost total lack of knowledge of how the
instrument works at that level, I didn't choose to question what she said.

With that said, two possible problems do occur to me:

- It could affect the operation key mechanism between the two joints.

- It could cause damage to the tenon and/or socket if one is not careful in
handling the instrument.

I'm not stating that *will* happen, as I'm not expert enough to say anything
for sure on this subject; these are just a couple of *possible* problems that
could occur.

I'd be curious to know what the designers of the instruments have to say about
this (I did email Leblanc with this question, don't know what I'll hear back).
Regardless, it would appear that a lot of other recognized experts do pull out
at the middle joint.

Thanks to Forest and others who responded. I had no idea that this would
generate this much discussion.

Regards,

Andy
