I follow my ear. Sometime I do, sometime I don't depending on numerous
variables (reeds, location, temperature, ensemble pitch.....blah, blah) It
has a decided effect on intonation. As my Bb typically starts flat and
comes up to pitch when warm, I seldom have to do it but under very warm
conditions.

Hope that helps

This is one of those situatins where an expert says "never". I re-call a
post from Clark Fobes awhile back, that said he "always" pulls at the middle
on his R-13 as the low register is always sharp otherwise.

Beware of the "never" word. As well as the "always".

>From my personal standpoint, I don't pull out at the middle on my A or my
Bb, but I always do on my bass. If I don't, I have unacceptable sharpness in
the lower register. I did make a "tuning ring" to fill the gap, however.
