This is one of those situatins where an expert says "never". I re-call a post from Clark Fobes awhile back, that said he "always" pulls at the middle on his R-13 as the low register is always sharp otherwise.

Beware of the "never" word. As well as the "always".

>From my personal standpoint, I don't pull out at the middle on my A or my Bb, but I always do on my bass. If I don't, I have unacceptable sharpness in the lower register. I did make a "tuning ring" to fill the gap, however.
