I find the same is true for my teeth, even without crowns on them. I've
always had uncomfortable, sometimes painful vibrations transmit through my
teeth into the jaw structure above them. I, too, switch back-and-forth
between double and single lip. If I must test-play a student's setup without
a patch, I always use both lips. I find even when playing single lip that
pulling the upper lip back and replicating as closely as possible the feel
of a double lip embouchure gets the overall result I am happiest with.
