I just had a conversation with Linda Brannen about this very subject, and she
indicated that one should *never* pull the middle joint out; that the
instruments are not designed to be played that way (by middle joint, I think
you are referring to the joint between the two main sections of the
instrument).

This may very well be a topic of controversy; any wisdom one way or the other
on this?
